June labor report: Job market cools with 57,000 new jobs

The US economy fell below economists’ expectations, adding 57,000 new jobs in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate inched down to 4.2%.

Professional and business services saw the largest job gains in June, adding 36,000 new roles, suggesting corporate demand for specialized talent hasn’t disappeared even as overall hiring cools.

Healthcare added 22,000 new jobs, continuing its streak as one of the economy’s steadiest hiring engines, but at a slower rate than in previous months.

Leisure and hospitality saw a loss of 61,000 jobs, reflecting softer seasonal hiring after a strong spring.

Government gained 8,000 roles in June.
