June labor report: Job market adds 147,000 new jobs; unemployment drops

The US labor market was stronger than economists’ expectations, with 147,000 new jobs added in June. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% compared to 4.2% in May’s report, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Government employment increased by 73,000 jobs last month, mostly from state government and education jobs. However, there was a loss of 7,000 jobs in the federal government.

Healthcare added 39,000 new jobs, while leisure and hospitality gained 20,000 new roles in June.

Professional and business services saw losses of 7,000 jobs.
