May labor report: Job market adds 139,000 new jobs; unemployment remains unchanged

The US labor market was higher than economists’ expectations, with 139,000 new jobs added in May. The unemployment rate remained unchanged from April’s report at 4.2% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Healthcare added 62,000 new roles last month, which exceeds the average monthly gain of 44,000 new roles throughout the past year.
Leisure and hospitality also saw significant gains, with 48,000 new jobs added.
The federal government shed 22,000 jobs, while state and local governments added 21,000 new roles for a net loss of 1,000 in the sector. Professional and business services saw losses of 18,000.
