3 job search myths you need to forget

Addison Group

Everyone has their own opinion on how job searches should be conducted. These opinions being taken as truths have caused a lot of misinformation to spread over the years.

To improve your chances of landing a job, you need to forget the following job search myths immediately.

Job search myth #1: You don’t need a lot of details in your resume

A common myth is to keep your resume general. However, the truth is you should never leave out important details on your resume. You can’t assume that a hiring manager will see you’re qualified for a job based off vague experience descriptions.

Leaving out important information on your resume because you think you’ll talk about your qualifications during the interview guarantees you won’t make it to that stage. You want to make it obvious on your resume that you’re capable of handling this position. Include detailed descriptions of your experiences that qualify you for a position. What systems are you familiar with? How much revenue have you generated? How much money were you in charge of? Details matter.

Job search myth #2: You can get through the automated system with no issues

These days, many hiring managers rely on applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen out applications that don’t contain keywords from the job descriptions. This means a recruiter might not even get a chance to read your resume. This is why you never want to send the same resume to every opening, and instead personalize each one. You want to customize every application to fit the open position. Use relevant keywords and job titles from the job description posted. This goes hand-in-hand with the first myth and why you need to detail your resumes.

Job search myth #3: Every application will get a response

Many people assume they’ll get a response to every application, even if it’s a rejection. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Many times, you’ll send an application to a hiring manager and never hear back. While it’s frustrating to not hear back about why you were passed over, it’s a normal part of the process. Remember, some open roles have hundreds of applicants. While a response is always appreciated, understand that the hiring team may not have the bandwidth to respond to every applicant.  Don’t get discouraged. If you don’t hear back from a hiring manager within a reasonable amount of time, move on.
