September labor report: economy adds 119,000 jobs

According to a delayed report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US added 119,000 new jobs in September, exceeding economists’ expectations. The unemployment rate climbed to 4.4%, compared to 4.3% in August’s report.

Healthcare added 43,000 new jobs while leisure and hospitality gained 47,000 new roles.

State and local government added 22,000 new jobs, while the federal government eliminated 3,000 roles in September. Professional and business services also saw a decline of 20,000 roles.

The BLS announced it would release both October and November’s jobs data together on December 16.
