The US economy surprised economists in March, adding 178,000 jobs. Unemployment dropped slightly to 4.3%, compared to 4.4% in February according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The gains mark a recovery from February’s losses, which were largely attributed to severe weather and labor disruptions, and suggest underlying resilience despite broader economic uncertainty.

Healthcare led the way, adding roughly 76,000 new roles. Ambulatory (outpatient) healthcare services accounted for a significant share of hiring with 54,000 new jobs.

Warmer weather helped construction add an additional 26,000 jobs. Federal government continued to decline, shedding 18,000 roles in March.

Leisure and hospitality gained 44,000 jobs, while professional services remained largely flat, signaling a more cautious hiring environment outside of the key growth industries.

Overall, March’s labor report reflects a market that is stabilizing, but not accelerating, as employers balance ongoing economic uncertainty with continued demand in critical sectors like healthcare and construction.
