After a job interview ends, the process isn't over. What you do in the days following is as important as your preparation and performance.

After completing a job interview, the process doesn’t end once you’ve said goodbye. What you do in the days following the interview is just as important as your preparation and performance. Taking proactive steps to stay organized, engaged, and prepared can set you apart from other candidates.

Here are five key actions to take after your job interview ends that can help you navigate the next stages of the hiring process.

Send a thank you email

Within 24 hours, send a personalized thank-you note to the interviewer(s). In the note, express gratitude for their time, highlight key points discussed in the interview, and reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and the company. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have forgotten about during the interview.

Review and reflect on the interview

After the interview ends, take a moment to reflect on the questions you were asked and your responses. Consider what went well and what you can improve on for future interviews. It helps to write down the key takeaways from the interview right after it’s over while everything is top of mind.

Follow-up

If the interviewer mentions a timeline for follow-up, check in if you haven’t heard back from them in that time frame. If the timeline is vague, following up with the interviewer about a week after the interview is standard. A polite follow-up email shows you’re still interested and keeps you top of mind.

Update your job search tracker (or make one if you haven’t yet)

Keep track of all the details regarding the interview, such as the company, position, date, and any important insights. Having a tracker helps you stay organized and better prepared for the next steps.

Prepare for a potential second interview

If the interview went well and you think you’ll be called back for a second round, start to prepare for more in-depth questions. Reflect on your initial responses, think about areas you can expand on, and research any additional information about the company.

These are just a few of the many proactive choices you can make after finishing a job interview to set yourself up for success. Following up with an interviewer demonstrates personal and professional qualities that are typically sought by an employer like dedication, tenacity, and attention to detail. Oftentimes, the right follow-up can turn itself into your next career.
