Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

Addison Group

Though historically this entire week was dedicated to honoring administrative professionals—thanks to either the National Secretaries Association or some “Mad Men” back in the 1950s—these days we observe Administrative Professionals Day every third Wednesday of April. Here are some fun facts about this special holiday:

  •  While many sources recognize Mary Barrett, president of the National Secretaries Association (now referred to as the International Association of Administrative Professionals) and C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone Corporation for its creation, others credit Harry Klemfuss of the advertising agency Young & Rubicam with the establishment of the holiday.
  • The observance was originally established in an effort to encourage women to pursue administative careers and help alleviate the shortage of skilled workers of the era.
  • The word secretary can be traced back to the Latin word for “secret”. Though “secretary” has become an antiquated term, it was originally meant to refer to an employee who was set apart and expected to handle significant tasks, sometimes confidential in nature (hence the title Secretary of State).
  • There are nearly 9 million administrative professionals working in the United States today.

The title “administrative professional” has changed several times over the years to encompass the evolving roles of staff members. Addison Group is aware of the changing administrative environment and constantly works with both clients and candidates to help educate them on the current job market. We understand that the message of the holiday (whether referred to as National Secretaries Day or otherwise) remains the same: to recognize and reward those individuals who provide the support necessary to keep things running smoothly.

We consistently hear public figures—CEOs, politicians and the like proclaiming that their administrative professionals are amongst the most valuable members of their teams. It is appropriate then that we should have a day dedicated to their recognition. Whether it is flowers, a luncheon, or a simply card to express gratitude, participating in Administrative Professionals Day will show your employees that you care. How will you honor your Administrative team this year?
