Dave Owens


Vice President, Talent Acquisition

Dave has led our Campus and Internal Recruiting teams since he started with the company in 2019. One of his top initiatives since joining Addison Group has been to redesign the Campus Recruiting strategy to promote more opportunities for growth and a long-term career within Addison Group. Read on for more of Dave’s insight about how Addison Group sets our new hires up for success.

What is a project or time that you are most proud of in your journey with Addison Group?

In our first full-year of revamping our Campus Recruiting strategy, we met with an unforeseen obstacle – a global pandemic. Understanding how important the Campus Recruiting initiative was to Addison Group’s larger Talent Acquisition strategy, my initial worry was, “What will happen to the 80+ rising graduates who had committed to a career with our organization? Are we going to follow suit with other organizations in our industry and completely back-track on our commitment to these early career professionals?”

Our team was fortunate enough to have the support from Tom Moran and the rest of our leadership team, who decided we would stand true to our commitment to these early-career professionals to whom we made job offers. We were forced to delay start dates and realign some of the incoming new hire roles; but we didn’t rescind any offers. I am most proud of our leadership team’s strategic thought and fortitude to stand by our people-first mentality. I believe that actions speak louder than words, and I am incredibly fortunate to be a part of an organization that stands by those values.

With your recent promotion to Vice President, what are your main goals for Campus Recruiting in 2022?

Being surrounded by a phenomenal group of diligent and dedicated teammates our main goal for Addison Group’s 2022 Campus Recruiting strategy is to further our standing as an Employer of Choice at our University Partners and attract the most diverse and capable collection of employees, specifically recent graduates, that Addison Group has ever seen.

What sets Addison Group’s Campus Recruiting efforts apart from other organizations? What does your team do differently?

In today’s competitive talent landscape, though employers are technically interviewing candidates, those same candidates are just as equally interviewing potential employers. At Addison Group, we recognize that we operate in a very niche and unique industry and the opportunity to work here may not be suitable for everyone. The reality is, that less than 1% of college students go into their collegiate studies wanting to pursue a career in talent advisory. That is completely understandable, a good majority of our population find a career here almost by “happy accident”.

Our Campus Recruiting strategy is set-up to recognize that the candidate interview experience is a two-way street. We want to be as upfront and transparent in our approach as possible; to ensure that we are assessing candidates and educating them on what a career with our organization can offer. It would be a disservice to the candidate as well as our organization to misrepresent what a career would offer to any interested party. To emphasize transparency and communication, we integrate it through various events such as facilitating mock interview days, career education panels, sponsoring various student organizations, hosting trivia events with members of the local offices the night before our on-campus interview days, job shadowing before our interviews, and more. We want to engage and educate everyone and anyone that has ever been interested in exploring what a career in professional services could offer.

What is the biggest career lesson you’ve learned so far?

I have learned to this point in my professional career is how far resiliency, a willingness to learn and a positive demeanor can take you. I know that sounds a bit cliché but with all the uncontrollable factors that encompass our day-to-day lives, there seems to be a lack of emphasis on those intangibles that are very much within your control.

In any professional services or client-servicing environment, there will always be factors  out of your control. In those situations, a resilient mindset or ability to continue striving towards a successful end-result, can often be the difference between a successful outcome versus an unsuccessful one. By approaching any situations with that mentality, regardless of how good or bad the outlook may seem, there is always an opportunity to learn.

What would you say to a potential candidate about starting a career at Addison Group? Why Addison Group?

I decided to work in talent advisory and staffing because of the uncertainty I faced when kicking off my career. I explored careers in accounting, finance, consulting, insurance, sales – almost everything under the sun. When I graduated from college, I was fortunate enough to have a close friend recommend the talent advisory industry. When I speak with individuals in the early stages of their career, I always urge them to pursue what they are passionate about. If you are unsure of what you want to pursue, or don’t know exactly what you want to do; it is absolutely worth considering a career in talent advisory.

The best position any early professional can align themselves to is in an opportunity to learn and to build transferrable skills. Managing internal and external stakeholders, managing clients, managing candidates, project managing a process from start to finish, collaborating with colleagues, fine-tuning professional communication skills, building out a subject matter expertise, developing a leadership presence; all these intangibles can provide success, regardless of where someone decides to align their career. It is hard for me to pinpoint a better opportunity for early career professionals to be able to develop those transferrable skills, in an environment that offers internal career progression, the way that Addison Group does. To my original point, this industry is not for everyone. And there is nothing wrong with that. But for individuals that are unsure of where they want to kick-off their professional career, that want an opportunity to grow with an organization that has a reputation for offering upward mobility, at the very least, it is worth exploring what a career at Addison Group can offer you.

As Vice President of Talent Acquisition, Dave Owens has over nine years of talent advisory experience across professional services, including executive search, consulting services, and talent solutions. He began working for a contingency-based recruiting agency before transitioning into the retained executive search space. He developed and led an internal talent acquisition strategy from the global scope.

Dave is responsible for aligning Addison Group’s current and future growth strategies with our organization’s continued investment in early-career professionals. He has a deep knowledge and understanding of fostering internal and external relationships to ensure that the Addison Group is best positioned to educate and onboard talent across all of our brands. He leads his team with a client-centric and transparent approach.
